Coach Deion Sanders and his Colorado football team can still do it.

If they beat Texas Tech in Lubbock today, they will be one step closer to two of the biggest trophies in college football – a Big 12 championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

A win would mean they would remain in at least second place in the Big 12 with three games remaining in the regular season.

A loss could destroy these hopes.

The Buffaloes (6-2) are tied with Iowa State for second place in the Big 12 standings with a 4-1 record in league play behind BYU (5-0). The Buffs don’t play either team and could use a loss at Iowa State to clear their path.

But winning at Tech today is essential to staying in the best position after last week’s break. They are in 20th place in the race for the 12-team playoffs. A win would also help two-way star Travis Hunter’s Heisman Trophy candidacy.

However, it doesn’t seem to be easy. Texas Tech (6-3) has the fifth-leading rusher in the country in yards per game: senior running back Tahj Brooks (130.9).

Can Travis Hunter win the Heisman Trophy?

Another big game from him today on offense, defense or both would further advance his candidacy for the award. According to BetMGM, he is currently the favorite to win, ahead of Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

Hunter missed the second half of two games this season with a shoulder injury, but time off last week helped him recover. His participation in two national pregame shows on Fox and ESPN last week also increased his profile.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders said he would even vote for Hunter to win the trophy over Sanders’ quarterback son Shedeur, also a Heisman candidate.

“Travis gets my vote,” Sanders said Saturday on Fox’s pregame show “Big Noon Kickoff” in Lubbock.

Shilo Sanders trial

Colorado safety Shilo Sanders, son of coach Deion Sanders, had a key hearing in his bankruptcy case Thursday in Denver. He wasn’t required to be present and wasn’t as he prepared for Saturday’s game at Tech. His lawyers made arguments on his behalf as he sought to free himself from more than $11 million in debts related to a 2015 incident.
