ForbesToday’s word number 1242 with tips, hints and answers for Tuesday, November 12th

Wednesday is named after the god Odin, the All-Father. The word in French is Mercredi and in Spanish it is Miercoles. In Italian it is called Mercoledì. They are named after the Roman god Mercury. Both Odin and Mercury are gods of intellect and cunning – think “mercury” – and both are considered cunning.

Interestingly, Wednesday in Portuguese is Quarta-feira, or “fourth fair,” a word that completely eschews pagan gods. Perhaps it is more interesting that, given Christianity’s enormous influence on every aspect of life, so many days remain dedicated to the pagan gods. In Portuguese, except Saturday (Sabado) and Sunday (Domingo), every day of the week is named after a number rather than a god.

Well, not so bad considering how difficult that word is. CRATE is a solid opener for any day and left me with just 60 words today. PROUD reduced the number to four, but unfortunately that was still too many to make this a bow on guess #3. However, PRISM left me with only one solution: PRIMP for the win!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word prim probably arose in the early 19th century as a mixture prime (means “neat” or “tidy”) and cleaning (means “carefully tidy up or organize, especially the external appearance”). In English, it was developed to describe the process of making small adjustments or improvements to someone’s appearance, often with an element of self-conscious attention to detail.
