Trump and Putin ‘discuss Ukraine’ in conversation – as Biden urges president-elect not to leave Kiev | US News

Donald Trump reportedly urged Vladimir Putin in a phone call the day after the presidential election not to escalate the war in Ukraine.

Accordingly, the US President-elect also reminded the Russian President of America’s significant military presence in Europe during the conversation on Thursday The Washington Post and Reuters, citing sources familiar with the call.

According to several other sources, the two then discussed the goal of peace on the continent as well as the prospect of further talks soon to consider resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Last US election: Trump “called Putin”

The Kremlin announced this on Friday Mr. Putin was ready to discuss with Ukraine Mr. Trump However, that did not mean he was willing to change Moscow’s demands, namely that Ukraine give up its ambitions to join NATO and give up the four territories currently held by Russia.

The Washington Post said two sources indicated that the Ukrainian government was aware of the conversation between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin — and had no objection to the conversation.

However, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said it was “impossible” that Ukraine would have agreed to such a call and that other reports were “false.”

Asked about the call, Steven Cheung, Mr. Trump’s communications director, said: “We do not comment on private conversations between President Trump and other world leaders.”

The Russian embassy in Washington has not yet commented.

Under Mr. Biden, Washington has provided tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid to Ukraine — funding that Mr. Trump and some of his supporters have repeatedly criticized and rejected.

Mr Trump insisted last year that Mr Putin would never have invaded Ukraine if he had been in the White House at the time and has repeatedly said he could resolve the war “in a day” if re-elected.

On Sunday evening, the Ukrainian president said Volodymyr Zelensky said strength and diplomacy must work together to end the two-and-a-half-year war.

“We clearly understand that diplomacy without strength has no perspective,” he said.

“But without a clear understanding of diplomatic objectives, weapons alone are not enough. That’s why strength and diplomacy must go hand in hand.”
