Trump appoints Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence

President-elect Trump announced Wednesday that he is naming Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence in his new Cabinet.

In a statement, Trump said the former congresswoman “fought for our country and the freedoms of all Americans.” Gabbard served as a Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii from 2013 to 2021 before becoming an independent and then recently joining the GOP.

“As a former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, she enjoys broad support in both parties – now she is a proud Republican!” Trump’s statement added. “I know that Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our intelligence community by standing up for our constitutional rights and ensuring peace through strength. Tulsi will make us all proud!”

Fox News Digital confirmed earlier Wednesday that Gabbard was on a shortlist of candidates for the position. In September, the former Democrat told Fox News Digital that she would be “honored” to join a Trump administration.

Gabbard is also a veteran and active Army reservist. She is now co-chair of the Trump transition team.

Fox News Digital’s Sarah Rumpf and Morgan Phillips contributed to this report.
