Trump offers Rep. Elise Stefanik the job of ambassador to the United Nations: report

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik for the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to a report.

Trump offered Stefanik the gig late Sunday, a source familiar with the assignment told CNN.

The apparent offer follows earlier reports that Trump was eyeing the powerful chairman of the House Republican Conference for the gig.

Stefanik reportedly caught the attention of the future president with her aggressive defense of his policies.

Her departure from the House would trigger a special election within 90 days to fill the open seat in the northern part of the state that she will leave behind. Her successor would likely be another Republican, given the reliably red district she represents.

This is a groundbreaking story. Please check back for updates.
