Two suspected drunk drivers involved in three-car crash – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

According to Fort Worth police, a three-car accident that occurred overnight on US-287 involved two suspected drunk drivers.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Monday near the Village Creek Road exit. According to the police, charges must now be brought against the two suspected drunk drivers.

Images from the wreck site showed three badly damaged cars scattered across US-287, the remnants of a crash that Fort Worth police said could have been worse.

“23% of all DWI crashes are fatal,” said Buddy Calzada, public information officer for Fort Worth PD. “This one was extremely dangerous.”

Investigators said the chain of events began when 26-year-old Rachel Hadley, who had been drinking, crashed her SUV into a construction barrier.

Police said a pickup truck pulled over and a good Samaritan jumped out to help Hadley.

“While they were helping her, another vehicle came up and actually crashed into the bed of that pickup truck,” Calzada said.

Investigators told NBC 5 that the driver of the sedan that caused the three-car crash also had been drinking.

The man, who tried to help at the scene, was thrown from the accident and was taken to hospital, suffering minor injuries, and was released the same day.

He told NBC 5 he was disappointed in the other drivers’ actions – and wished they had made safer decisions.

“Unfortunately, this happens far too often,” Calzada said. “Our last officer we lost in the line of duty was a drunk driver.”

In August, Fort Worth police Sergeant Billy Randolph was struck and killed on I-35 by a suspected drunk driver.

Police said that with so many alternatives to driving under the influence, such as getting a ride from a sober friend or arranging a ride, endangering others on the road should not be an option.

“The holidays are just around the corner and we want you to spend time with your loved ones,” Calzada said. “We don’t want you to get drunk and hurt your loved ones, we don’t want you to have to worry about your loved ones on the street.”

Police said Rachel Hadley has been charged with drunken driving and the second driver who caused the three-car crash will be charged with drunken driving.
