Warriors honor Klay Thompson in his return to Chase Center with the Mavericks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Just minutes after the final buzzer sounded and the score was still on the big screen, a touching graphic was displayed for all to see: side-by-side photos of Stephen Curry dribbling left-handed and Klay Thompson almost same pose, but now in a blue Mavericks jersey.

The Golden State Warriors had just finished their season-opening home game and the game against Dallas was next at Chase Center – all fans in attendance were given a captain’s hat, honoring Thompson’s tradition of going to games as “Captain Klay.”

On Tuesday night, Thompson returns to face the Warriors for the first time since joining the Mavericks in July on a three-year, $50 million contract after 11 seasons and four championships with Golden State.

“To be honest, I don’t think I’ll really know until I get there,” Thompson said when asked how he would react to the reunion. “It would certainly be nice to see all the people that I worked with, especially the coaching staff, because we had some… we got to know each other very well, very well, during those rehab stays.”

The veteran guard missed more than two and a half years – the entire 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons – recovering from surgeries on his left knee and right Achilles tendon before making his comeback in January 2022. He has called recovering from back-to-back injuries one of the hardest and most grueling things he has ever been through.

The 34-year-old Thompson insists he can concentrate like it’s just another game on the schedule, even though that’s hardly the case. When he joined the Mavericks four months ago, he sent a farewell message to Bay Area fans and is still very popular here.

“It won’t be that hard, I’m a professional and I know what it takes to win in this league so it won’t be very hard,” he said. “I know how to turn the page and concentrate. That’s why I was able to do what I did for 12 healthy seasons in 13 years. Very blessed.”

Questions from the first day of Warriors training camp centered largely around Thompson’s departure and how the Warriors would move forward without Curry’s splash brother.

They all miss him.

A special “Salute Captain Klay” ceremony is planned for the Warriors before the opening to honor Thompson’s 11 years of contributions to the franchise. The team said: “Fans are encouraged to arrive early, by land or sea, to pay a special pre-game greeting to the franchise legend.”

“What stands out most about Klay over the last 13 years isn’t his records, championships or accomplishments – it’s the truly unique relationship he has built with the Bay Area and our fans,” said Warriors President and COO Brandon Schneider in a statement. “He hugged Dub Nation and Dub Nation hugged him back. The Warriors fans have laughed, cried, cheered and celebrated alongside him, and it is only fitting that they get the chance to show their love and recognize him upon his return to the Bay.”

Thompson wants to enjoy the moment and of course try to win.

“It’s all good,” said Thompson. “I accept it. You can only do one thing so many times in your life.”
