Webster City man is charged with the 2023 murder of a 10-month-old boy

A Webster City man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 10-month-old boy.

Police accuse 26-year-old Gunner Jones of inflicting multiple blunt force injuries to the infant’s head, the criminal complaint states. He was arrested Tuesday in connection with the April 16, 2023 death.

According to a news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Webster City first responders were dispatched to a residence in the north-central Iowa city for a report of an unresponsive toddler. The infant was transported to two hospitals, including Blank Children’s Hospital, where he died later that day.

Medical evaluations and an inquest revealed the child suffered injuries consistent with child abuse, leading authorities to classify the death as a homicide, the release said.

According to a criminal complaint, the infant’s mother called 911 after noticing her son was turning blue and cold to the touch.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators determined that Jones and the mother were alone with the baby before his death. The mother had fallen asleep and Jones remained awake in the house with the infant.

Investigators determined that Jones was the only person alone with the infant before the injuries, the criminal complaint says.

The news release did not specify why the arrest was delayed for more than a year.
