Wembanyama’s explosive career night broke an incredible number of records

This scout must thank his lucky stars that ESPN’s Tim Bontemps is an upstanding journalist who would never reveal his sources. Saying that Victor Wembanyama has no impact on offense could go down as one of the worst sporting contests of all time. The Spurs defeated the Washington Wizards 139-130, behind the French phenom scoring 50 points on the night of his career.

The way the points came was the exact opposite of what most pundits were screaming about. It shows that there is more than one way to be dominant in today’s NBA. You don’t have to stand under the basket just because you’re over 7 feet tall, and the Wizards learned that firsthand.

One can argue whether Wemby is anywhere between 7’3″ and 7’5″ tall, but what cannot be disputed is the shooting feel he has at that height. There has never been a player with this ability in the history of the league. The Alien showed off just about every skill there is in basketball en route to a 50-game win at the expense of fellow Frenchmen Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr.

The Wizards did the Spurs fans credit by keeping the game close. In the first quarter it looked like the Silver and Black could get away with it. To Washington’s credit, they fought back and got close enough for Vic to light up the scoreboard, prompting a flurry of tweets reporting the records he had broken while in the Frost Bank Center rained down eight three-pointers.

Okay, you get it. Let’s put youth aside and just look at what he has done compared to all players, no matter how old they are. He even added six rebounds, three blocks and two assists to this performance. The absurdity continues.

The player who struggled to find his shot through the first eight games of the season can’t lead San Antonio back to the postseason. The Hooper who just delivered the greatest shooting performance you’ve ever seen from a 7-foot can – he can absolutely do it. He’s not going to make six 3-pointers every night, but he doesn’t have to. He has found his rhythm, which means he can hurt opponents from anywhere.

He has started using his mid-range weapons more often as the field has opened up for him since the rest of the players have been shooting so well. That coupled with his own shooting ability makes the Spurs offense a nightmare for defense.

When Jeremy Sochan returns, he’ll have more room to get to the basket, grab offensive rebounds and wreak havoc – that’s his specialty. Tre Jones will add another solid playmaker that the Spurs can rely on to make shots and defend at a high level.

If you look around the Western Conference, there are a lot of good teams, but they also have flaws. Nobody is perfect and Spurs, with Wembanyama playing like an absolute beast, can bully their way to relevance.
