Westfield High School senior dies in car accident

WESTFIELD, NJ – A Westfield High School graduate died in a car crash in Scotch Plains Monday night, Union County police said.

Union County police identified the student and fatal crash victim as Brandon Genlot of Westfield.

On Monday at 7:30 p.m., Union County Police were called to a motor vehicle accident on the Watchung Reservation on Sky Top Drive in Scotch Plains.

Union County law enforcement officers discovered a vehicle and the surrounding area engulfed in flames, said Union County Officer in Charge Capt. John DaSilva.

The Scotch Plains Fire Department extinguished the fire.

An investigation revealed the vehicle had struck a tree and caught fire, DaSilva said.

One person was found dead in the vehicle. The victim was identified later Tuesday as Genlot.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Union County Police Department.

Acting Principal Tom Paterson sent a letter to the school community sharing the heartbreaking news about Brandon Genlot.

“I wanted to bring this to your attention so we can come together to support our students, staff and Brandon’s family during this time of grief. “His family has given us permission to share the news of their loss because it deeply affects our school community,” Paterson said.

Genlot was repeatedly named to the school’s honor roll and also played volleyball for the high school.

The high school administration and counseling team are providing additional support resources for students and staff.

School officials said they would offer support to students.

“This morning we brought groups together by grade level to gently share the news. This gave staff and students an opportunity to begin processing their emotions together,” Paterson said.

The school works with the Traumatic Loss Coalition for Youth as well as counselors throughout the district to provide additional support to those who may need it.

Rooms and counselors are available throughout the school day for anyone seeking these resources, and students and staff are encouraged to reach out for support as needed.

Online resources are also available on the district website to help navigate and have conversations about this tragic loss, including “The Dos and Don’ts of Talking to a Child About Death” and “Dealing with the Death of a Friend.” “.

“Please remember Brandon’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Together we will honor his memory and support each other,” Paterson said.
