Peacock’s upcoming thriller series The Day of the Jackal is one of the most hotly anticipated new shows this fall.

The series, starring Eddie Redmayne as the eponymous elite assassin and Lashana Lynch as the British intelligence officer who is on his trail, is based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Frederick Forsyth and its 1973 film adaptation directed by Fred Zinnemann Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale.

The entire series consists of 10 episodes; The first five will be released on November 14th. The following episodes appear on Thursdays: Episode 6 on November 21st, Episode 7 on November 28th, Episode 8 on December 5th, and then the series concludes with a two-episode finale on December 12th.

Forsyth’s original novel and the film adaptation were set in the 1960s. Forsyth was inspired by the real-life assassination attempt on Charles de Gaulle, then President of France, in 1962. In both the real world and history, the assassination was supported by a French far-right terrorist group called Organization armée secrète (meaning “secret army organization”), also known as the OAS, which opposed de Gaulle for his stance on the terrorist attacks on the Country discussed France’s relationship with Algeria.

Algeria had been colonized by France for over a century, but after a war of independence, de Gaulle signed the Evian Accords, which ended the war and made Algeria a fully independent nation. The assassin, a French Air Force lieutenant colonel named Jean Bastien-Thiry, was captured and executed.

In the original The Day of the Jackal Novel and film, the plot begins after these real events. The story deviates from real life and shows how the fictional OAS hires a skilled British assassin, known by the codename “Jackal”, to carry out another attack on de Gaulle in the hope that he will succeed where Bastien -Thiry fails. He finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Claude Lebel, an experienced French detective.

It is now set in the present and does not focus on the French political machinations on which Forsyth’s novel was based. Instead of targeting the French president, Eddie Redmayne’s version of the Jackal targets Ulle Dag Charles (Khalid Abdalla), a technology entrepreneur whose new software threatens to expose the finances of the world’s richest people. Bianca (Lashana Lynch), a British intelligence officer, is hot on the Jackal’s trail and the two embark on a chase that takes them across Europe.

In the series, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne plays the jackal. You might also recognize him from his appearances in Les Miserables, The theory of everything (for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor) or the Fantastic beasts Series. Opposite Redmayne is Lashana Lynch, who audiences may recognize from her roles Captain Marvel, No Time to Die, And Bob Marley: One Love.

Ursula Corbero (Money Heist, Snake Eyes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) portrays Nuria, the jackal’s lover, whom he leaves in the dark about his true profession. Khalid Abdullah (The Kite Runner, the Moon Knight, the Crown) plays the Jackal’s target, technology entrepreneur Ulle Dag Charles.

Rounding out the show’s ensemble is Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Crown), Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones, Good Vibrations), Chukwudi Iwuji (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Peacemaker), Lia Williams (The crown, its dark materials), Elanor Matsuura (The Walking Dead, Wonder Woman) and Jonjo O’Neill (The Queen’s Gambit, the ballad by Buster Scruggs).

Who created The Day of the Jackal?

While the series is based on Forsyth’s original novel, Peacock’s new series was written by Ronan Bennett. Bennett is a Northern Irish writer and screenwriter whose works include the series Great boy and the 2009 film directed by Michael Mann Enemies of the state. The series was directed by Brian Kirk, who also comes from Northern Ireland and has, among other things, directed episodes of series Game of Thrones, Boardwalk EmpireAnd Lutheras well as the film 21 bridgeswhich stars Chadwick Boseman.
