White woman arrested after attacking Hispanic Trump voters

An elderly white woman has been charged with a hate crime in Washington state for allegedly attacking two Hispanic women who support Donald Trump.

The unnamed 82-year-old was arrested Monday on suspicion of committing a hate crime, although formal charges have not yet been filed, the Edmonds Police Department told KOMO News.

Bodycam footage shows the octogenarian telling police: “I walked up to her and said, ‘I want to know why you’re voting for Trump.’ That’s the only thing. And I said, ‘Because you’re brown.'”

Trump supporter Gina Powell said the older woman got in her face and questioned her race and beliefs as she and her friend Mary Jennings held signs on a street corner in Edmonds, a city about 15 miles north of Seattle waved and chanted with other Trump supporters.

“I was just shocked at the presence of mind and it made it very clear that it was the color of my skin,” Powell said.

Powell said she didn’t initially notice the woman approaching her because another woman had stopped to ask the group about their stance on abortion and reproductive rights.

The two friends tried to comfort the woman because she began crying when the 82-year-old approached the group and confronted Powell about her skin color and her support for the former president.

“And then she pushed me, pushed me back and I said, ‘Don’t touch me.’ And then, not even a second later, she shot me right in the jaw,” Powell said.

The older woman told officers her reaction was to push Powell away and put her hand on her chin. She insisted to police that it was not a serious attack, but admitted to police that she “did that.” That’s what I did.”

Jennings told the outlet she then walked in and told the older woman she had “no right to touch anyone.”

“She hit me, she hit me, and you know, it slammed my jaw,” Jennings said.

Both Jennings and Powell are physically fine but say the attack has taken an emotional toll on them.

“I haven’t been able to work yet. “I’m still kind of in shock,” Powell said.

The women emphasized the need for Democrats and Republicans to come together rather than let their differences divide them.

“Not everyone on the left is right, not everyone on the right is right, but both sides could bring important information to the center, we can, we must come together, we cannot continue the division,” Jennings said.

Both women said they would not be deterred by the incident and would continue to support Trump.

“He got hit by a bullet and said ‘Fight, fight, fight.’ I got a little poke in the chin, so I’m not sitting down,” Powell said, referring to the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler County, Pennsylvania, in July.

Police said they had established probable cause for a hate crime arrest and that “the suspect continued to show no remorse for the incident and attempted to push an officer while demonstrating her behavior.”

According to the outlet, prosecutors have until the end of the day to make a charging decision.
