Whoopi Goldberg claims bakery refused to make her birthday dessert

Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday surprise was bittersweet this year.

As she celebrates her 69th birthday The view On Wednesday, November 13, the TV personality claimed that the bakery that made her birthday treats initially refused to take her order, suspecting it was because of her political views. The company – which the host did not want to name but was identified Weekly entertainment as Holtermann’s Bakery – later disputed this claim.

After an hour-long celebration in which Goldberg gave the audience her favorite things and her friend James Monroe Iglehart performed the Broadway theme song A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical, The view’The show’s co-hosts enjoyed a dessert that was close to the actress’s heart: Charlotte Russe.

The dessert – a small treat with layers of sponge cake, Bavarian cream and fruit – was one of Goldberg’s mother’s favorite desserts growing up, the star explained, before revealing that she had a hard time eating the cherry dish at the Staten Island bakery to get.

“Well, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” the actress explained as the crowd gasped.

Her co-hosts also reacted strongly to the information, with Sunny Hostin asking, “Oh, really?” and Sara Haines immediately spitting out her morsel, earning laughter from the audience.

“They said their ovens had broken down, all sorts of things, but people still picked them up,” Goldberg explained, “which is why I won’t tell you who made them.”

But, that Sister law Star theorized, “It may not be because I’m a woman, but maybe they didn’t like my politics.”

“But that’s okay,” Goldberg continued, “because guess what? Listen, this is my mother’s celebration. Grab these and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you to everyone who celebrated my birthday today.”

After the actress claimed on the show that the bakery rejected her because of its policies and used technical difficulties as an excuse, Jill Holtermann, owner of Holtermann’s Bakery, revealed a revealing denial EW that “it wasn’t because of political affiliations” but that “we had problems with our boilers”.

Holtermann said that The view The co-host initially asked for treats for a talk show appearance on November 6th and also for her birthday show, but the baker declined because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I couldn’t keep.” ”

PEOPLE reached out to Holtermann’s Bakery and The view for further comments, but did not immediately receive a response from either.
