Woman involved in incident requested charges against Colbie Young be dropped

Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young has been indefinitely suspended from the team since Oct. 9 after being arrested for assault and battery. Head coach Kirby Smart stated that Young’s suspension would remain in effect “until the legal matter is resolved” as the team prepared to face host Mississippi State. A solution that may come sooner rather than later.

On Wednesday, 247Sports learned that the alleged victim in the incident that led to Young’s arrest has recanted her statement to police and is requesting that all criminal charges against him be dismissed.

“Colbie did not place his hands on me in any way that was inappropriate or unwelcome during the conversation and argument,” the woman said in an affidavit. “He didn’t hit me. He didn’t push me. He didn’t leave me any bruises or scars. He didn’t hurt me in any way.”

According to documents obtained by 247Sports, the woman filed a motion to dismiss the charges six days after the arrest and made additional motions. Young’s attorney hopes Georgia will allow Young to return to the team and participate in all future activities.

“We are committed to educating our players and doing our best to ensure they understand the seriousness of these incidents,” Smart said at the time of Young’s suspension. “It is very unfortunate, but we want to take responsibility in our decision-making on and off the field. This is obviously a really difficult situation, but he is suspended indefinitely until the legal matter is resolved.”

Despite missing three games, Young is still fourth among wide receivers in receptions and fourth in yards and touchdowns. His 13.5 yards per catch is third among wideouts behind London Humphreys and Arian Smith. Smart noted Tuesday that Georgia could use all the help it can get after defeating Young and Anthony Evans.

“I don’t feel good about our depth at wide receiver or anything because I think you never have enough to practice like you need to,” Smart said Tuesday.

Young was arrested by Athens-Clarke County Police on charges of assault and battery on an unborn child. Details from the original incident report regarding Young’s arrest can be found here.

Young has played in five games this season. His most productive game to date was the 3-reception, 57-yard outing against Alabama.

“He’s getting better and better,” Smart said afterwards Tennessee Tech Game in Week 2. “Last week.” [against Clemson] was impressive. He continues to grow and get better and we will need him in our offense. We need him to be able to play more snaps and be in the best shape of his life to play enough snaps.”

Young came to Georgia this offseason with plenty of experience and hopes of playing a significant role at an SEC contender.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Young finished the 2023 season as Miami’s third-leading receiver and at the end of the regular season, Young had 47 receptions for 563 yards and 5 touchdowns for the Hurricanes. The 2023 season was his second MiamiBecause in his first year with the Canes he caught 32 passes for 376 yards and 5 touchdowns.

A native of Binghamton, New York, Young began his college career at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. There, Young recorded 24 receptions for 472 yards and 9 touchdowns.

“I had seen Colbie before he even got here, his movie from over there in Miami. He’s a good jump-ball guy,” cornerback Julian Humphrey said in March. “He is superior to the others, he is a big guy and will be a big part of us next season.”
