Yellowstone Season 5 Recap – What happened in Yellowstone Season 5

There are breaks and then there are those Breaksand the long, almost two-year break in the middle of the season for YellowstoneThe fifth season definitely deserves to be highlighted. The mega-hit Western’s final episode aired in a new episode in January 2023, but that’s about to change as the series makes its triumphant return on Sunday, November 10th.

Of course, one of the difficult things about having such a long gap between episodes is that it can be particularly difficult to keep up with all of the series’ complex storylines and the individual machinations of its many characters. So if you don’t have time to rewatch the first half of season five before the second half begins, or you just want a quick refresher on all the action, here’s where things left off, and The Important plot points to look out for in what could be the series’ final season.

John’s political career

Ranch owner and Dutton family patriarch John (Kevin Costner) continued his lifelong quest to protect his land in the first half of season five by reluctantly taking over as governor of Montana. He immediately cut funding for a previously approved international airport and scrapped plans to develop the area as a luxury tourism destination. While this move protected the portions of ranch land that would have been used for development, it also contributed to John’s ever-growing list of enemies; Most notable is Market Equities, the company behind the airport plan.

The company quickly dispatched the enigmatic cutthroat Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) to solve the problem. Sarah seduced herself into the good graces of Jamie (Wes Bentley), the black sheep of the Dutton family, who had been appointed attorney general by his father, despite John’s concerns about Jamie’s trustworthiness. It was an instinct that John probably should have listened to, because by the season finale, Jamie had called for John to be impeached for “robbing” the state by suppressing tourism plans while protecting his own properties.

At the time of the season finale, the tribunal was not yet officially underway, and since Costner had left the series during the hiatus, it is unclear how John’s storylines will end in the upcoming season.

The showdown between Beth and Jamie

News of Jamie’s betrayal enraged Beth (Kelly Reilly), his sister and only Dutton daughter, who defended her father and called for Jamie’s resignation. After spending much of the season trying to uncover Jamie’s murder of his own biological father, Beth found herself in a stalemate when Jamie pointed out that revealing his secret would also reveal all the people killed by the Duttons’ ranch along the way of the years since Jamie dumped the body at the “train station” – the same stretch of land without jurisdiction where John and his ranch hands (including Beth’s husband Rip) dump the bodies of the ranch’s enemies.

Although she was more than willing to get her hands dirty, this was apparently Beth’s first time learning where the bodies were buried (literally) and after a confrontation with John, she proposed that perhaps the best solution would be to get Jamie on his very own ticket to the train station. John appeared to consider the idea but didn’t respond on screen, leaving open the question of whether the father – who has long stood between Beth and her years-long quest to ruin Jamie’s life – was ready to make a permanent decision about Jamie still hit in the air.

However, while John debated this, Jamie was more certain and said that Beth would probably try to have him killed. He approached Sarah about some “professionals” who could make sure Beth was taken out first.

Kayce and Monica have some decisions to make

At the start of season five, the youngest Dutton son Kayce (Luke Grimes) and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) suffered a major tragedy when their unborn son died in a car accident. While the couple tried to move on with their surviving son Tate (Brecken Merrill), both struggled with the emotional and psychological toll, especially considering how strained their relationships with the other Duttons had been in the past.

Kayce admitted that he was worried about a vision he saw during his vision quest in Season 4 that made him think he had to choose between Monica and the ranch. At the end of the season, they discussed the possibility of moving to another house that John had offered them to have something of their own.

A cattle drive to Texas

A disease outbreak among Yellowstone National Park’s cattle forced ranchers to make the decision to move part of their herd to Ranch 6666 in Texas – where fan-favorite character Jimmy (Jefferson White) now lives – at the end of season five. With so many of their own cattle involved, John chose Rip to lead a group Yellowstone Ranch workers overseeing things.

The crew headed south in the season finale, but although the operation would likely take months or even a year, in the Season 5B trailer it appeared that Rip was back in Montana, suggesting that there was a change there Plans could have taken place.

Problems with the reservation

Over the course of the series, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), the head of the local reservation, has been both an ally and an enemy of the Duttons, but in the first half of season five he had many of his own problems to deal with on his mind. Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher), an advisor who had previously worked with him, had begun promoting a popular, younger challenger for the leadership of Rainwater, forcing him to seek political power.

In the midst of all this also came news that the U.S. government planned to run two major pipelines through reservation lands, damaging and potentially polluting the tribal homeland. Rainwater knew that opposing the pipeline plan might be enough to save its position and tried to use the situation to its advantage. However, his press conference on the issue was interrupted when news of John’s impeachment broke.
