“Yellowstone” star Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly in the new episodes of season 5

play

NEW YORK — Let’s address the big question that resonates throughout the “Yellowstone” universe.

Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, better known as Rip and Beth, don’t know (both claim) or won’t say (more likely) whether they will continue the neo-Western – whether in a new, unannounced season or a spin-off. off – beyond what was announced as the upcoming final episodes of TV’s No. 1 series.

However, California native Hauser, 49, and London-born actress Reilly, 47, who play America’s favorite passionate power couple, are ready to shoulder the series’ dramatic burden following the departure of Kevin Costner, who played patriarch and Yellowstone ranch owner John Dutton appeared. And they can’t wait to put their work to the test when the long-awaited second half of Season 5 begins Sunday on Paramount Network (8 EST/PST) and, most believe, well beyond.

“There is responsibility, yes, and there is more burden,” Hauser told USA TODAY in a joint interview with Reilly. “I enjoy it.”

“Now a different part of the story needs to be told,” adds Reilly. “It’s about who’s left and how are they going to cope and what are they going to do? There’s tension there that’s exciting and new.”

It far exceeds the previous excitement surrounding Costner’s role as Dutton, the cornerstone of the ever-expanding “Yellowstone” universe since its premiere in 2018. After a long battle with creator Taylor Sheridan over control, pay and filming schedules, Costner officially confirmed his decision June that he wouldn’t be coming back. His announcement came after production had already begun in Montana, where Dutton served as TV governor.

While Dutton has a large role and appears in flashbacks using previously shot footage, loyal ranch hand Rip and Dutton’s foul-mouthed daughter Beth are his clear successors.

“John Dutton is still the central figure of the series,” says Reilly. “He’s all we talk about – especially Beth, who has two men in her life, Rip and her father. Since season 1, she has been her father’s loyal soldier and fights for him against everyone.”

This army of Dutton enemies appears to be becoming deadly in the final episodes. The trailer shows Beth arguing with lawyer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), who has teamed up with John’s scheming son Jamie (Wes Bentley), now the Attorney General. Sarah and Jamie attempt to overthrow his father’s empire when Jamie begins impeachment proceedings against him, even musing darkly to Sarah about how she might “go delinquent” by hiring professionals to take him out.

What does Rip stand for? Beth won’t swear for Cameo

Rip and Beth individually have their respective legions of fans. “You’re not perfect; That’s what people fell in love with, their big flaws,” says Hauser, who, contrary to fan theories, insists that Rip is his character’s first name. “It doesn’t stand for rest in peace or anything.”

But Yellowstone Ranch’s strong, silent fixer is ready to kill and eliminate Dutton enemies at the “Bahnhof” ranch burial ground. Beth is Tito’s vodka-drinking, facially scarred warrior, known for her fist-fighting (verbal and physical) and her dead-eyed, Sheridan-penned lines like “You are the trailer park; I am the tornado” is revered.

Beth’s broadsides are so popular that they adorn T-shirts, coffee mugs and cocktail glasses. One fan offered “a much of Money” to have Reilly insult a loved one on Cameo as a 50th birthday gift. “I thought I would do it for charity but backed out. “I didn’t want to muddy the waters. Nobody wants “Happy Birthday” from Beth. They want a “(expletive) you.”

What is so appealing about Rip and Beth as a couple?

Alone they are powerful, but together Rip and Beth transform into a cattle ranch “Wuthering Heights” Catherine and Heathcliff are fiercely devoted to each other.

After Beth proposed, they married out on the ranch in the season four finale, with John as their only witness. On their first date, they drank whiskey from a bottle in Rip’s car and went wadingChing wolves eat a moose. In the famous scene where a screaming Beth unexpectedly sprints towards the wolves with her bottle, they were real wolves.

“They were trained, but they were still wolves,” says Reilly. “I told the handler, ‘I’m really going to run at her screaming like a banshee. How do you know they won’t come back to haunt me?’ She said, ‘Well, I don’t.’ I thought ‘great’.”

“I was there for you with my little buck knife,” says Hauser.

The wolves ran away like most of Beth’s enemies. But some enemies aren’t so lucky. Take Atwood, who is already widely believed to be behind the seemingly inevitable death of John Dutton.

“A woman can only take so much. He is the center of her soul,” says Reilly, acknowledging Beth’s reaction to her father’s dark fate. “What will this do to this woman? It will turn them into a hurricane.”

How — and if — John Dutton will die are other looming “Yellowstone” mysteries, as is the end of the new six-episode half of the season. Reilly, like other actors, received redacted scripts to increase secrecy. Hauser, whose role extends to the ranch business and the bunkhouse, insists his scripts have not been redacted. “I got all six scripts, no editing,” he says. “I don’t play this game.”

Yellowstone Season 5 Trailer Part 2 features Kevin Costner’s Dutton

Watch the new trailer for the second half of “Yellowstone” season 5, premiering November 10 on Paramount Network. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton returns.

Reilly says she knew from the beginning how “Yellowstone” would end. Costner’s early departure did not fundamentally change that course. “It shouldn’t have happened so quickly,” she says. “But the fact that we were able to poetically return to the authentic vision of the show is really satisfying.”

Once the finale airs on December 15, the duo can either set (or announce) a new season or series.

“We seriously don’t know,” says Hauser, who refuses to swear on it. “The truth is that there is nothing final or set right now,” says Reilly. “We want everyone to see these last six episodes as their finale. And then when there is a future and Taylor writes something inspiring for us, we both said, ‘We’re here.'”
